Martin Widmer is a Geneva-based artist working primarily with photography and writing. Over the past years, he has begun incorporating the raw materials traditionally used in photographic processes—glass, aluminum plates, glue, wood, and cardboard—into immersive installations. In these works, the viewer finds themselves quite literally within the apparatus of the image.
Widmer’s texts, written under self-hypnosis and guided by the Oblique Strategies deck (developed by musician Brian Eno and others), extend his visual explorations into the realm of language, creating a poetic dialogue between word and image.
With over 30 years of exhibitions, Martin Widmer is considered one of Switzerland’s leading contemporary photographers. In 2024 he was awarded the Geneva City Grant for a documentary project (FMAC). His work has been shown in major institutions, including the Centre de la Photographie Genève, the Fotomuseum Winterthur, the Photoforum Pasquart in Biel/Bienne, and the Centre d’Art Contemporain de Neuchâtel.
